The Good Lifestyle changes and some nutrients show longevity enhancement in animal tests, and it seems likely (obvious) that eating well, exercising moderately, and ensuring a good intake of antioxidants and other longevity-enhancing compounds will diminish the ravages of age. *

The Not-So-Good
Well, no outright cure for aging and ultimately, death, has been discovered. But on a more serious note, the human research on longevity is limited, and the best we can generally do is extrapolate from animal models (that don't necessarily apply to humans). That said, the cost-benefit of eating well, exercising, and taking a few of the top-contender supplements (for example, antioxidants, resveratrol, and benfotiamine) seems a no-brainer. Also, maintaining a healthy-low blood sugar reading seems an important factor for slowing aging.

Resources The latest research on longevity and supplements (or other health practices) can be found at LifeExtension.com or the highly-informative forums at The Immortality Institute site.

Issues There are several theories of aging -- mitochondrial, free-radical (oxidation, simplistically), and telomeric among them. Lesser theories abound. Confusion (somewhat) reigns. For example, Seventh Day Adventists, who are vegetarian, generally enjoy better-than-usual health and lifespan. But those that make it into their eighties and nineties do worse than a similar sample of meat-eaters. Explanation? Some theorize that benefits of Carnosine, found in meat, eventually shine for those that have survived a carnivorous diet long enough. Carnosine has a positive (that is, limiting) impact on protein cross-linking that tends to happen (and damage cells) in aging humans.

Evidence suggests that insulin levels can be a major positive or negative influence on lifespan, and that for longevity, ideal blood sugar levels should be 86 or lower. Consult the blood sugar section for hints on keeping your blood sugar down.

Longevity Supplements Table The table below summarizes the current research for nutritional and lifestyle effects on longevity. In some cases, the research is stronger than in others, but this table should be used only as a general guideline, in any case. Anyone embarking on a nutritional/exercise regimen should work with a sympathetic doctor, particularly if medications are also being taken.

Useful Nutrients
A top-N list of supplements known or suspected to slow aging is shown in the
below. But good places to start are r-lipoic acid (with) acetyl-l-carnitine, resveratrol, coenzyme q-10, a good multi-vitamin or two, and a good antioxident blend. That said, enjoying life, exercising, managing your weight, and eating a good diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables are probably at least as important.

resveratrol Believed to be the source of the French (health) Paradox, and found in the fabled Chinese longevity herb Fo-Ti. Thought to produce calorie-restriction anti-aging effects without a starvation diet! Stability of reservatrol is a question - get the newer stabilized form. Research suggests large doses (>100 mg/day) are required for best anti-aging effects (though benefits are shown for much smaller doses). animal study trans-resveratrol, 100mg
resveratrol + grape seed extract
benfotiamine A potent inhibitor of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), considered major culprits in the aging process. survey
benfotiamine & vaso/nerve aging

benfotiamine
ashwagandha Numerous benefits, including brain health, vitality, and anti-cancer properties. But for anti-aging, shows specific anti-glycation effects. ashwagandha .vs glycation
Sensoril ashwagandha
r-lipoic acid A powerful anti-oxidant with many benefits. Take with biotin, which lipoic acid can compete with. R-lipoic has better research support than the alpha-lipoic version . Get the 'stabilized' version, which has longer shelf life and absorbs much better than ordinary ALA or RLA. Best taken on an empty stomach with a glass of water, not at the same time as acetyl l-carnitine.
ala and aging, diabetes
alc and ala
stabilized r-lipoic acid
acetyl-l-carnitine Good for brain and celular metabolism. Combined with lipoic acid, reversed animal aging in one study. The arginate variant shows stronger brain benefits.

milk thistle (silymarin)An antioxidant and immune stimulnt,  long valued as an excellent liver and kidney tonic, Silymarin has also shown anti-aging properties similar to resveratrol. Some life-extensionists take resveratrol in the morning (since it is mildly stimulating) and silymarin at night. Silymarin is poorly absorbed, so favor Siliphos or another absorption-enhanced variety.longevity: tehcnical discussion and research reference on sirtuins and silymarinsiliphos

vitamin D Research on D and longevity is still somewhat thin, but the evidence that D benefits immune function is building, and D's relation to bone health has long been established. There is also recent evidence that D helps to increase HDL and might inhbit cancer. Supplementation is especially important when ones exposure to sunlight is limited. Use the D3 variety. vitamin D3
carnosine Slows protein cross-linking in studies, one component of aging.  carnosine and aging

coenzyme q-10 Diminishes with age, and implicated in so many health issues that it seems a no-brainer. The ubiquinol form seems to be best absorbed.    coenzyme Q-10
multi-vitamin As complete as possible. If you can stand taking nine tablets a day, get Life Extension's multi . Otherwise, opt for Life Force which is a very good formula (though see the caveats about piperine/bioperine).   Life Force (iron-free tablets)
